Cumming Group, under the name Prosurv, were appointed to provide professional quantity surveying, employer’s agent, and project management services on the construction of Swansea University’s new Bay Campus. We helped to develop, coordinate, and conclude a detailed specification of architectural information and worked closely with Swansea University’s Estates Department, along with various Heads of Faculties, to refine the University’s brief and ensure that the project was capable of being delivered within the strict funding restrictions constraining the University’s budget.

Cumming Group tendered and coordinated the complete remediation and reclamation of the project site, which formerly held a BP oil refinery, prior to it being shortlisted as a suitable University location. We were involved in the initial budgeting effort as well as the production of cashflow, and we provided detailed cost analysis to assist in securing project funding, including obtaining grants for research and development. Cumming Group provided a range of other services as well, including tendering and developing the brief for the IT, data, and wi-fi installations; developing and managing the installation of the dining and bar facilities; and managing the administration, facilities management, and retail unit fit-outs. We also managed the design, implementation, and relocation of existing laboratories, workshops, and testing facilities.

Constructed in just over two years, the Bay Campus is home to the School of Management as well as the College of Engineering, the latter of which includes the IMPACT project, a research institute focused on advanced engineering and materials. The new campus also doubled the size of Swansea University, leading to a significant increase in student and staff intake, as well as in new research projects awarded to the University. All buildings on the Bay Campus achieved BREEAM sustainability ratings of ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent,’ with the student residences earning an ‘Outstanding’ rating.
