Project Description

Restoration of the Italian Gardens, Trentham Estate, Staffordshire, UK

Project Description

Sold in 1979, the Trentham Estate fell into serious decline and disrepair, changing ownership twice until all 725 acres were purchased by St. Modwen Properties from British Coal in 1996. In 2000, an ambitious £100 million redevelopment of the former Trentham Gardens commenced. Works included the demolition of the existing ball room, construction of a new garden centre, restoration of the Italian gardens, a new retail village, and both onsite and offsite infrastructure improvements.

Dubbed by the Daily Telegraph as ‘The Garden Makeover of the Decade’, works to Trentham Gardens are 80% complete, with further expansion planned later this year. Trentham is now one of Staffordshire’s leading leisure and tourism attractions.

Cumming, under the name Prosurv, managed the £5 million restoration of listed stone structures, fountains, and landscaped gardens throughout the site, as well as the £250,000 restoration of a dilapidated listed building known as ‘Doll’s House’.
