In 2020, the construction market in the East Midlands region saw a decline of 25.1%. In 2021, the market is expected to make slow and steady gains each quarter to return to its pre-pandemic trajectory.

The private housing sector makes up most of the construction market for East Midlands, and should continue increasing for the next three years. Infrastructure and private manufacturing structures were hit hard in 2020 — declining nearly 50% — which could explain why East Midlands may take about five years to get back to its 2019 level. Both non-residential and public construction saw peaks in 2019 but were dragged down due to the pandemic.
